BRUSSELS (US Scrap Corner): Turkey
Steel Scrap imports hit an all-time high of 22.415 million tons last year and
retained its 'world's biggest Steel Scrap importer' title, according to the
Bureau of International Recycling (BIR).
As per latest figures released by BIR, Western Asian nation Turkey's overseas purchases of steel scrap advanced by 4.5 per cent to reach an all-time high of 22.415 million metric tons last year. Country has imported 21.460 million metric tons of steel scrap a year earlier.

--Turkey’s steel scrap buying from the United States, world’s leading exporter, advanced by 13.8 per cent to around 6.398 million metric tons.
--Turkey maintaining its position as the world’s biggest buyer of EU steel scrap in last year with 11.05 million metric tons, up 10.9 per cent compared to 2011.
--It is noticeable that, in 2012, Turkey was the biggest buyer of steel scrap for all the main exporting countries of the EU-27.
--Turkey’s steel scrap purchase from Russia jumped by 14.8 per cent in 2012 while its imports from Canada dropped sharply by 52.9 per cent to 0.338 million metric tons.

Turkey Steel Scrap Use and Crude Steel Output
Turkey’s steel scrap usage in 2012 was jumped 5.1% year-on-year to around 32.4 million metric tons although country’s crude steel production growth was still higher at 5.2 per cent. Turkey and United States are the only two major nations showed uptrend in steel scrap usage last year.
According to worldsteel, the main scrap using nation Turkey's crude steel output rose by 5.2 per cent to 35.9 million metric tons.
